Kenyan Chai Recipe (Authentic Kenyan Milk Tea)

What is Kenyan Chai?

Kenyan chai is a rich, creamy milk tea enjoyed every day in homes across Kenya. Unlike many teas that are brewed separately before adding milk, Kenyan chai is traditionally made by simmering tea leaves, water, milk, and often spices together. The result is a smooth, full-bodied tea with a comforting aroma and flavor.

Whether served at breakfast, during an afternoon tea break, or when welcoming guests, Kenyan chai is a staple of Kenyan hospitality. It is commonly enjoyed with mandazi, chapati, toast, or biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups of milk (as preferred)
  • 2 tsp Ketepa Tea
  • 1 tsp Tropical Heat Tea Masala
  • 2–3 tsp sugar/sweetener (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Pour the water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add the Ketepa Tea and Tropical Heat Tea Masala.
  3. Reduce the heat slightly and let the tea simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Add the milk and sugar, then stir well.
  5. Bring the chai back to a gentle boil, watching carefully so it doesn't boil over.
  6. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for another 2–3 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  7. Strain the chai into mugs and serve hot.

Tips for the Best Kenyan Chai

  • Simmer the tea gently to allow the spices to fully infuse.
